Patient Care Technicians often perform more independent functions than CNAs, though they also report to RNs.  A Patient Care Technician has often undergone more training than a CNA to handle more aspects of a patient’s care, including duties such as drawing blood, administering intravenous therapy (IV), gathering specimens for diagnostic test, performing electrocardiograms (ECG’s), monitoring the nutritional value of a patient’s diet, assisting patients in motion exercises or physical therapy and performing laboratory work.
